KANPUR: The enforcement wing of Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC) on Saturday demolished around 180 structures, including 25 permanent ones constructed unlawfully. The demolition operation was led by mayor Pramila Pandey.
The operation commenced from Bhairav Ghat crossing to KD Palace via Gwaltoli area. According to official communication, four trucks of household possessions belonging to the encroachers were confiscated. The enforcement wing had previously demolished 120 structures, including 40 pucca illegal constructions along Sisamau Nullah on Friday.
Despite resistance from residents, the mayor insisted that illegal structures would not be permitted and removed.
She issued a stern warning to the unlawful occupants, stating that this operation would continue, and those who had erected kuchcha or pucca illegal structures over the Sisamau drain should vacate them voluntarily, else KMC would demolish them and impose penalties.
The mayor subsequently visited Beconganj locality to inspect closed temples in the area. According to a KMC survey, over 120 temples situated in the Muslim areas are shuttered. The mayor addressed reports that more than twelve temples were closed in Sunar Wali Gali.
She discovered temple premises illegally occupied and sealed with shutters. After attempting to break the shutter locks, she inspected all temples in the lane, finding them illegally occupied with unauthorised constructions. She asked locals to remove illegal structures from temple premises.
She visited the Radha Krishna temple in the locality, which after being made free from encroachment, was found deteriorating. All temples would be reopened and restored, she declared.
