Xavier Bartlett, Nathan Ellis and Spencer Johnson have been named to return for Australia’s T20I series against Pakistan, with all Test players rested before facing India, but the new captain is yet to be confirmed Is.
Australia’s latest T20I captains in Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head are unavailable, as is ODI and Test captain Pat Cummins. Glenn Maxwell, Adam Zampa, Matthew Short and Aaron Hardie have all captained the side in the BBL, while Josh Inglis is also a strong candidate, as his leadership and tactical knowledge are highly regarded as the vice-captain of the Perth Scorchers.

Bartlett, Ellis and Johnson have returned from injury after a tough tour of Britain, where they were ruled out due to various issues. Johnson returned to domestic cricket last Friday when he played in a one-day cup match for South Australia against Queensland.

Bartlett (side strain) and Ellis (hamstring) have been slow to recover, but they are expected to be fit for the three-match series starting on November 14 and ending on November 18.

The 13-member squad was no surprise as the group had the same name as the group that toured the UK in September. Maxwell returned after being rested from the T20I portion of that tour. Short and Jake Fraser-McGurk are set to open the batting, as will likely be the case in the ODI series against Pakistan ahead of the T20Is. Fraser-McGurk batted at No. 3 in his last T20I when Short opened with Head.

With the series ending just four days before the opening Test against India in Perth, no key Test players were made available. Marsh and Head are also not playing the ODI series as they are on paternity leave.

However, CA has left the door open for members of the T20I squad to join the Test group after the series, meaning Inglis and Sean Abbott could still be in the reckoning.

“Any members of the T20 squad selected for the first Test will join the rest of the group after the final match in Hobart,” a CA statement said.

Australia will have a different coaching staff for the T20I series, with head coach Andrew McDonald, batting coach Michael Di Venuto and bowling coach Daniel Vettori all getting a short break ahead of the Test series.

Assistant coach Andre Borovec will take charge, as he did for Australia’s five-match T20I series against India in India last October. Former Australia batsman Brad Hodge is also set to join the group as an assistant coach after a tour as a coaching consultant with Australia’s T20 World Cup squad in June. Matthew Wade, who has not yet retired from international cricket and captained Australia’s T20I team in February, is reportedly set to join the team for a coaching role.

Pakistan vs Australia T20I team: Sean Abbott, Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Aaron Hardie, Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Short, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa.
