After losing the wicket of captain Rohit Sharma early for just 8 runs, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal displayed his excellent form and kept India in the game with an aggressive half-century.
Jaiswal’s 62-run partnership for the second wicket with Shubman Gill (23 runs off 31 balls) provided India with the momentum needed to chase the challenging target. However, the situation soon turned against the hosts as disaster struck in the very next over with an “avoidable” run-out which shifted the momentum in New Zealand’s favour.
Rishabh Pant is yet to score a run and got into a tangle with Virat Kohli while attempting a risky single. Kohli tapped the ball from Ajaz Patel at backward point, but Pant called the call wrong. Santner fielded the ball quickly and delivered a precise throw to wicketkeeper Tom Blundell, leaving Pant well off his ground despite a desperate dive.

Pant’s dismissal left India at 127/4 as they lost two crucial wickets in consecutive overs.
This run-out also resulted in Pant joining an unwanted list – becoming only the third Indian batsman since 1990 to be dismissed for a duck through a run-out while batting in the top seven positions. The other two players to share this unfortunate record are Rahul Dravid. , who was run-out against Pakistan in Lahore in 2004, and Cheteshwar Pujara, who recorded two such outs: once against Australia in Dharamsala in 2017, and again against South Africa in Centurion in 2018.

India have lost the momentum after Pant’s dismissal and now they face an uphill battle to chase this difficult target.
