Union Minister and BJP’s chief strategist Amit Shah, speaking in Kolkata today, announced that BJP will form the government in Bengal in 2026.
He said, “Mamata didi was happy after our seats were reduced (in the Lok Sabha elections). Don’t forget, we are a party which had two seats but our aim was to remove Article 370.” “There is state-sponsored infiltration in Bengal and the only way to stop it is to elect BJP in 2026…Instead of Rabindrasangeet, Bengal is hearing the sound of bombs today,” he said.
He said, “In 2026, BJP will form the government with two-thirds majority.”
His claim comes amid a strong anti-government atmosphere in Kolkata following the rape-murder of a 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College.
Since the August 9 incident, Kolkata and large parts of the state have seen civil society joining protests against junior doctors demanding justice as well as against corruption and rape culture.
Although the protests were called off recently after the doctors’ meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the simmering situation still continues in the state.
The BJP remained largely in the background of the protests, which claimed to be apolitical but were widely seen to be supported by the Left.
There is speculation that the BJP is hoping that the momentum of the protests will be enough to topple the Trinamool government in time.
Today, Amit Shah also talked about the alleged law and order problems and quoted actor-politician Mithun Chakraborty who had alleged that cadres of the ruling Trinamool Congress do not allow BJP supporters to vote.
