“I want to enjoy whatever cricket I have been able to play over the last few years,” Dhoni said at a promotional event in Goa. “Like in childhood we used to go out and play at 4 o’clock[pm]Just enjoying the game. But when you play professional sports it becomes difficult to enjoy the game like a game. So what I want to do is there are emotions and commitments, but I want to enjoy the game for the next few years.”
Dhoni said, “My thinking was simple, if other people are doing their job well then why do I need to come up the order.” “If you are talking specifically about last year (season), the T20 World Cup squad was going to be announced soon. So we have to give a chance to those who are fighting for a spot. Our We have a few in the team (CSK), [Ravindra] Jadeja was there, Shivam Dubey was there so you give them a chance to prove themselves to come into the Indian team. There was nothing in it for me, no selection and other things. so i’m good behind [playing down the order] And my team was happy with what I was doing.”
Dhoni: ‘I like how teams are playing Tests now’
Dhoni said, “You can give any word to cricket as you want, we have seen that cricket has evolved.” “The way people are playing cricket is very different. There was a time when something was considered a safe score in ODIs, now that score is not even safe in T20.”
“You give a word to something, it becomes more interesting as you start talking about it, you start connecting with it but at the end of the day what is it? It’s a way of playing cricket. Some people want to play aggressive cricket.” Some people want to play authentic cricket. It depends a lot on what kind of team you have got – can they change the way you play that cricket and it is important to realize the strengths of your team. You decide how you Want to play cricket but it takes time. It doesn’t happen that overnight you say, ‘Let’s start playing like this tomorrow’. You need to give time to individuals because they have probably played 10-12-15 years of cricket and they have a certain way of playing cricket, so you have to give them that time to change.”
Dhoni said that there were some difficult days back when he was playing Tests, especially when he knew that the match was heading towards a draw.
“For me, the toughest time during a Test match was the fifth day of the match, that is, the last day when you knew 100% that it was going to be a draw,” he said. “I would still need to last about 2.5 sessions and that was the most tiring part. You see there are no results happening, you are just going through the paces. Yes, the bowlers will want to take wickets, the batsmen Will try to score runs, [but] There was no result in the game. You think let’s get this over with and leave, why do I have to stay here. So I like the fact that there has been a change in the way teams play Test cricket.
“Imagine telling someone who doesn’t know much cricket we play for five days and we start at 9.30 and there is a scheduled end of the game at 4.30, we play till 5[pm] Sometimes, even after another five days we don’t get any results. This is not good for the game. So I like how there are more outcomes in today’s world. Even if we’re only playing four days of cricket and one day gets wasted, you’ll still get a result – that’s the beauty of Test cricket and it should remain that way – you want to get a result after five days and you don’t have to. “Draw what you want.”
